Music for Moodset

Most of us can relate to the initiation of Christmas soundtracks as background music to get us in the mood for Christmas from early December. The music reminds us of the energy and enthusiasm associated with that time of year, and it eases us into the celebrations and congregations that we enjoy at Christmas time.

When I am preparing to workout at home I have certain soundtracks which get me in the mood for a tough gym session. It is different to the Christmas soundtrack but it is appropriate for the task at hand!

In the car, I typically listen to audiobooks although if I am driving to the gym or to a physical challenge, I might listen to energising music to get me in the mood.

On Spotify, I have created a playlist called “Memory Lane” which is a chronology of my favourite tunes from each year going back to the 80s. Each song has a specific set of memories associated and it can transport me back in time! The playlist lifts my spirit.

I recently read an article about power songs: The creation of a personal power song which integrates affirmation, motivation, and confidence. It is a song you create (in other words write the lyrics) and then work with a musician to fine-tune!

The point is that moodset is all about the background music, literally and figuratively. It is within our control in our own environment, to create a climate for optimal energy; an atmosphere which suits the occasion, the task, or the challenge.

If you are a team leader, think about the background-music for your team (figuratively speaking). Is the team “hearing” something that lifts the mood, or is there the sound of silence? Are they excited by the soundtrack, or depressed by the drumbeat?

Creating a climate for individual and team excellence is like setting the right mood. Climate is like the background music. Get it right and anything is possible. Get it wrong and very little gets done.
